The Iowa Quilt Block was established in 1987 by Mary Miller and grew to be a "must stop" for quilty travelers making their way across I-80. Shelley and Hollie, a mother and daughter team, purchased the store from Mary in 2018. Shelley learned to cross-stitch and embroider at the age of 5 when her grandmother gave her needlework for her birthday. She branched into other creative pursuits such as scrapbooking, sewing garments, dying fabrics, and painting, but fell in love with quilting after making her first quilt at age 30. Anything but traditional, Shelley likes to take traditional ideas and give them a modern twist of color and design. Her passion is encouraging others to take creative risks and learn new skills. Hollie runs the service department and is a Certified Bernina Technician. A hobby mechanic, Hollie has been taking things apart and putting them back together since she was a small child.
Anyone can carry fabric and patterns, but what sets us apart is our friendly and knowledgeable staff! We love helping people! We have a passion for introducing beginners to sewing and quilting; we offer a variety of classes to teach everything from sewing basics to completing your first quilt. In addition, we are more than happy to help you with your projects if you get stuck or are just overwhelmed-bring your sewing machine and your project and we will complete it together.
If there is not a class taking place in our classroom, we offer the use of our large tables to baste your quilts or lay out your project. Would you and your friends like a space to hang out and create in? Reserve the classroom space for free!
Look at our calendar to see all the classes and events that are upcoming! We are always adding new ones, but if there's one you want to see (or one that you teach!) contact us and let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org
Come in and find out why so many makers tell us that we are their favorite shop in the area!
